Endowment for ; and bridge funding for the library's Program in African American History.

The Library Company seeks an NEH Challenge Grant of $500,000 with a 3:1 match to endow the Program in African American History (PAAH), the only such program in the nation dedicated to promoting the study and understanding of African American history, culture, and thought in pre-20th century America and the Atlantic World. Of the total, $100,000 will provide bridge funding and the $1.9 million endowment will annually provide: 1) $35,000 for research fellowships (a nine-month dissertation fellowship @ $25,000 and four one-month fellowships @ $2,500); 2) $25,000 for programming (conferences, workshops, lecture series, publications) and acquisitions; and 3) $35,000 for staffing (Director's stipend and partial support for the Curator of African American History). The Challenge Grant will enable PAAH to increase scholarly attention to early African American history, promote diversity within the profession, and share the knowledge created by scholars with an engaged public.
