Slavery in the American Republic: From Constitution to Civil War

A two-week college and university summer institute for twenty-five participants on the issue of slavery in the early American Republic.

CCHA requests funding for a two-week Summer Institute for 25 faculty members from community and four-year colleges and universities on the topic "Slavery in the American Republic: From Constitution to Civil War" to be held at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC and the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, from July 5-18, 2015. The Summer Institute will feature fifteen eminent scholars (David Brion Davis, William J. Cooper, James Oates, Elizabeth Dowling Taylor, Peter Kolchin, Michael F. Holt, Peter Onuf, Greg Grandin, Leni Sorensen, Mary V. Thompson) and content specialists (Jeffrey Flannery, Mark Dimunation, Julie Miller, Nicole L. Bouche, Edward F. Gaynor). Field study visits and research opportunities are built into the Institute schedule. The Summer Institute will be directed by Paul Benson, Mountain View College.
