To undertake an intensive study of the scholar-officials of Sung China (960-1279) before the Mongols. Many of these neo-Confucianists experienced and expressed the conflicts they had between their ideals and the administrative reality. It is a parallel to what we are experiencing ouselves now: intellectual in the establishment.
