To discover how, within the workings of a complex, traditional society in India, a political system of "imperial" dimensions could emerge under British rule. To examine the way in the which the British utilized "the inner logic" of political processes to adapt themsleves to the conditions necessary for acquisition of power, bringing political unity to India. This new historiographic view of South Asia is a valuable contribution to modern history.
