To study the transition in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries from the traditional society to the modern class society. The project will deal with those societies where 75-95 per-cent of the population were peasants who stood in a servile relationship to the higher orders. The study will focus attention on agriculture and the peasantry, an important, but often overlooked segment of social and economic history.
