To study the manner in which blacks and ethnics have been seen by others, and how they perceive themselves. PI will investigate the economic nature of slavery: the extent to which urban dwellers controlled their own economic and cultural destinies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: the degree to which assimilation and acculturation took place; the significance of the family structure; the relationship between economic class and ethnic and racial tensions, and the nature of the working class.
