To provide 12 outstanding mid-career journalists with an opportunity to take a "sabbatical" from their jobs and spend an academic year studying at Stanford University in a program of their choice, with special emphasis on the humanities. Ultimately, to improve the quality of reporting in the American press and broadcast media by giving journalists a chance to expand their understanding of basic humanistic values and ideas.
