To do intensive reading in two areas: (1) the way in which conceptions of a distinct and self-regulating sphere of "economic" activity were developed in British and French thought; (2) the way in which presumed divisions between the economic, the political and the social influence differing conceptions of what comes to be known as "the social problem" in 19th century examinations of modern or industrial society.
