To apply recent methods and techniques for studying humor to the study of "high literature." To examine professional humorists in America to look at some "popular culture" media which exploit humor, to study some of the scholarly and critical methods used to discuss humor, and to apply these criteria to the works of such writers as Hawthorne, Melville, and Faulkner.
