To study the problem of restoring the historical voice of those groups which have left few written records behind them and have thus been rendered historically inarticulate through neglect. To examine selected old materials - songs, tales, folk beliefs, proverbs, anecdotes, jokes, reminiscences - from various periods in U.S. history and explore the ways in which those materials can be used to create a more balanced picture of its American past.
