The study is an interdisciplinary exploration of insanity in European law, medicine, theology and fiction from the 11th through 14th century. This work will be the first exhaustive enquiry into an important problem which preoccupied both medieval societies and their specialized theoreticians and which continues to engage the attention of contemporary civilization.
