To continue work on a critical study in English of the poetry of Aim^ Cesaire, a black poet from the French Antilles. PI will study Cesaire's rhythm and metaphor, his borrowings from Nietzsche and Frobenius, and his gradual shift away from reliance upon Surrealism toward a less dense type of poetic construct. The project has special importance because of the prominence of Aime Cesaire as a spokesman for the emerging literature of the Third World.
