Attitudes Towards Justice, Law, and Lawyers in 11th and 12th Century England and France

Study will focus on the attitudes towards the settlement of disputes that were expressed in 11th and 12th century England and France. Project will develop theories that: (1) the systems of secular and ecclesiastical law that developed in the later 11th and 12th centuries were often regarded with deep suspicion by many people in England and France; and, (2) that the lawyers and judges who administered these new legal systems were often thought to be enemies of "true justice." Systematic study will be undertaken of the writings of St. Bernard, Ivo of Chartres Anselm, Suger and Lanfranc and other contemporary writers of England and French intellectuals. P.I anticipates publication of work in the American Journal of Legal History.
