FAIN: FT-14097-78

Jean Fagan Yellin
Pace University (New York, NY 10038-1502)

To do a book-length manuscript on the work and writing of the antislavery feminists. These women influenced two of the major cultural statements of the century: Hiram Powers' THE GREEK SLAVE and Nathanial Hawthorne's Hester, heroine of THE SCARLET LETTER. An examination will be made of the crucial connections between these major artistic works, female slavery, and the work and writings of the anti-slavery feminists.
