The MSSU Spiva Art Gallery is an extension of Missouri Southern State University's mission to broaden cultural and social perspectives through education, international exposure, and creative endeavors in all forms of art. This exhibition will inform, delight, and challenge many audiences both on and off campus through its exhibition at the MSSU Spiva Art Gallery, while also offering invaluable resources and exposure to global art and culture, an especially important mission given the relative dearth of museums in the surrounding area. The public availability of such objects will provide the public with knowledge of Northeast Brazilian art and culture, especially as related with, and influenced by, African art and culture. Considering the isolated location of Joplin, MO, there are limited opportunities for exposure to non-Western narratives, especially those found within the art world.
