Planning to ensure the protection of the entire
collection and especially its most vulnerable components, conservation
treatment of more than 400 endangered objects, and the purchase of preservation
supplies.
The project would provide preservation and conservation to the Puerto Rican ethnographic objects collection, covering the 17th century to the 20th, of the Luis Muñoz Marín Foundation, which suffered damages from Hurricane Maria. The affected collection includes memorabilia, paintings, textiles, wooden furniture, ethnographic objects, archaeological objects, office objects, basket weaving, leather, musical instruments, and more. For this special grant, conservator Cesar Piñero recommends the immediate treatment of 416 objects, starting with the ones of highest urgency. This treatment would involve the removal of mold and spores from the objects’ surfaces. It also would include assessing any necessary future treatments.
