To research and to edit the diary (1848-59) written by Lorena L. Hays about life in a small Illinois community, an overland journey in 1853 and six years in the central gold mining region of California. Besides adding to the history of the westward migration, the diary contributes to women's history through her observations about the society around her, the demands placed on women, and the political movements that involved them.
