The Study and Reconstruction of the Hull of an 11th-Century Islamic Ship

FAIN: RO-*1451-78

Texas A & M Research Foundation (College Station, TX 77843-0001)
J. Richard Steffy (Project Director: May 1978 to October 1990)

To assist in the recording and reconstruction of the hull of an Islamic ship which sank at Serce, Liman, Turkey in 1025 or shortly thereafter. This hull, which is fairly well preserved and which depended more on its skeletal framework for strength and on skeletal building techniques in its construction than did earlier known Mediterranean hulls, promises to shed new light on the evolutionary development of this historically significant advance in the art of seafaring. Project will permit as thorough a study of the hull remnants as possible and will produce a reconstructed hull for museum display. Results will be published.
