Project to write Concise History of Chinese Literature to be published by Thomas Y Crowell Company as part of four-volume series on Oriental literature. ABSTRACT: Project to write Concise History of Chinese Literature to be published by Thomas Y Crowell Company as part of four-volume series on Oriental literature. Designed for non-literature oriented students, study focuses on social background and origins of Chinese literature and what Chinese literature reveals about Chinese culture and society. Aims to examine how the development of each literary genre is related to a people's concept of reality and to social conditions of the time. Will include introduction chapter on characteristics of Chinese language; latest scholarship on all subjects and authors; balanced respresentation of literary works, with one-third devoted to primary sources; accurate translations of original sources, stressing need for new material and fresh translations; and selective bibliography of books, articles and translations dealing with Chinese literature.
