Planning of two long-term core exhibitions exploring how racial, gender, and labor issues influenced life at Cincinnati's Union Terminal, especially during the World War II era.

Cincinnati Museum Center requests a planning grant through Interpreting America's Historic Places to fund "Ahead of Our Time: Exploring Interreligious Cooperation, Gender, Race and Labor at Cincinnati's Union Terminal" from 10/2010 to 9/2011. This project will interpret how Cincinnati's train station provides a powerful lens to examine how critical issues such as race, gender, labor and interreligious relations shaped our nation's development in the mid-20th century. In these areas, Union Terminal's policies were forward thinking and controversial. These themes will be explored through through historical exhibits concentrating on two concrete efforts: *Establishment and maintenance of the United Service Organization Troops in Transit Lounge at Union Terminal and Employment of African American men as Pullman Porters and Red Caps and their struggles for access to better jobs and pay through union organizing.
