The principle mandate of this institute will be to consider a specific form of cultural engagement. Namely, historic personalities and their writings, institutions, organizations, and research resources that constituted the foundation of Eurasian international (later, area) studies in America. These components will be considered within the broad framework of the geopolitical relations of America and Eurasia over more than 150 years. The Institute's Principal Investigator and Co-Directors hope also to suggest a more broadly applicable paradigm of area studies development in the United States (for Middle Eastern, East Asian, African, Latin American studies, etc.), suggesting avenues of comparative research. Drawing on the insights of recent scholarship, the Institute participants and visiting presenters will consider the geo-political influences during three historical stages in the evolution of America's academic engagement with Eurasia. |
