This proposal is for The Power of Place: Land and Peoples in Appalachia, a three-week institute for teachers in July of 2013.The Power of Place will be held with thirty educators from across the country, July 7 to July 26, at the University of North Carolina Asheville. The project will be sponsored by the James Agee Film Project of Johnson City, Tennessee, producers of the national PBS series, Appalachia: A History of Mountains and People. Power of Place will use insights from the study of environmental history to examine the role of landscape in the shaping of culture and history, with the Southern Appalachians as a case study. The content will be the complex history and culture of the Southern Appalachian. The method will be to employ the perspectives of environmental history to tell the story of the region from a fresh and compelling perspective. |
