One of the most potent sites for generating romance continuations, Chrétien’s unfinished grail story introduces a series of puzzles that require us to confront irreducible contradictions in human experience. Those puzzles and paradoxes propel successive continuators to reread and rewrite his story. My book project traces the thread of contradictions operating on a variety of levels through the unexpected detours of Chrétien’s romance, as it anticipates and frames a dialogue with multiple continuations. It offers the first book length study of the verse continuations, which have been undeservedly marginalized by critical tradition. |
