My project, a study of Berthold of Nuremberg's unpublished 13th-century reworking of the treatise on the Cross written by the influential Carolingian monk and polymath, Hrabanus Maurus (ca. 780-956), will examine the role of diagrammatic imagery in the Middle Ages as well as transformations in attitudes towards images over the course of the Middle Ages. Entitled From Cross to Crucifix, the resulting book will focus on the historical, art-historical, literary and art-historical implications of the shift from the cross as sacred sign to the historical narrative of the crucifixion. |
