EDGARD VARÈSE AND THE LIBERATION OF SOUND will be the first comprehensive, scholarly monograph on one of the major figures of 20th-century music. Varèse (1883-1965) envisioned the development of electronic music as early as 1915, well before it existed. His archives are now available for study for the first time. My book, a cultural biography combining methodologies from musicology and American Studies, will be the first monograph to incorporate these important materials.
