This project is a study and translation of Lin Xiyi's Zhuangzi Juanzhai kouyi, a 13th century Chinese commentary on the Zhuangzi. The Zhuangzi is one of the two foundational classics of the Daoist philosophy and Lin's interpretation has had a profound impact on both Chinese and Japanese thinkers. Unlike earlier commentators who focused on Daoist teaching, Lin's text integrated Confucian and Buddhist thoughts and drew upon a wide range of literary texts. This synthetic nature made his work a very rich source of East Asian intellectual history. Despite its importance, Lin's work has never been translated into any Western language. My project will make this seminal text accessible to Western readers by producing an English translation of the Zhuangzi Juanzhai kouyi and an analytical introduction. It will expand the primary sources for the study of the East Asian philosophy, religion, aesthetics and literature and help general readers learn one of the world's great intellectual traditions. |
