A partnership between the Maine Humanities Council (MHC) and Maine Historical Society (MHS) requests $400,000 to implement "Maine in the Civil War: Making Connections through the Humanities and Digital History." The project is designed to (1) deepen civic engagement in Maine communities through close examination of the state's experience during the Civil War; (2) create and provide online access to primary documents, online exhibits, and other interpretive material that illustrate that experience through the Maine Memory Network (www.mainememory.net), MHS's nationally-recognized statewide digital museum; and (3) develop and pilot a model for intensive programmatic collaboration between MHC and MHS. The project will mentor sixteen Maine communities through a year-long examination of their community's participation in the Civil War and its relationship to the experience of the state and nation, combining reading and discussion with extensive hands-on historical practice and local collaboration. |
