This application requests a $398,946 Humanities Discussions grant for “Music Unwound,” a consortium of orchestras, music festivals, and institutions of higher education determined to prioritize humanities-infusion as a strategy of audience growth and engagement. The grant would fund 9 cross-disciplinary festivals in 6 states. The centerpiece of each festival is a scripted concert with a continuous visual track. The music is placed in a cultural/historical context via multimedia components including actors, photographs, film, and scholarly commentary. Each festival includes additional ancillary events. Each deals with a topic in American music – and uses that as a springboard to explore present-day concerns. The audiences are exceptionally diverse. All events prioritize audience discussions. The applicant organizations include 3 orchestras, a music festival, and 2 schools of music. The application also includes 3 NPR documentaries. |

The present application requests $760,538 (a Chairman’s Award) for “phase three” of an existing NEH project: Music Unwound, a consortium of orchestras, festivals, and universities engaged in re-thinking their core mission in order to incorporate thematic, contextualized, cross-disciplinary public programming. In phases one and two, each participant undertook one, two, or three festival topics: “Dvorak and America,” “Copland and Mexico,” and “Charles Ives’s America.” For phase three, the consortium would add a new, fourth topic to the mix: “Kurt Weill’s America.” The four topics, in tandem, cover a broad swath of American cultural history. |

A consortium of four orchestras -- Pacific Symphony, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the North Carolina Symphony, and the Louisville Orchestra -- seeks NEH support to create humanities-infused thematic programming. Two “Music Unwound” topics would be developed: "Dvorak and America," and "Copland and Mexico." Each orchestra would use a composer to illuminate issues of culture and society and explore these topics via festivals incorporating multi-media subscription concerts. Ancillary events, educational outreach, and collaborations with museums are also planned. The project will provide contexts for emotional and intellectual engagement and features potent linkage to high schools and universities featuring thematic humanities content. “Music Unwound” is conceived in the conviction that if orchestras are to regain impact as agents of cultural identity, a broader humanities mandate would vitally enhance both their mission and their capacity. |

The present application requests $425,588 (a Chairman's Award) for Phase Two of an existing three-year $300,000 NEH project: "Music Unwound," a consortium of four orchestras each of which is engaged in re-thinking its core mission in order to incorporate thematic, contextualized, cross-disciplinary programming. The orchestras are the Pacific Symphony (Orange County, California -- the lead partner), the Louisville Orchestra, the North Carolina Symphony, and the Buffalo Philharmonic. In Phase One each orchestra undertakes one or both of two festival topics: "Dvorak and America" (already presented in the 2011-12 season) and "Copland and Mexico" (to be presented in 2012-13 and 2013-14). For Phase Two (2014-15 and 2015-16), the consortium would add a new, third topic "Charles Ives's America" in addition to two new members: the South Dakota Symphony and the University of Texas. |
