A two-semester training course for museum studies graduate students and veteran curator-artists, followed by their collaborative facilitation of public discussion programs on veterans’ artistic responses to war experiences.

The Museum and Exhibition Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago (MUSE UIC), in partnership with the National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM), proposes to conduct a Dialogue on the Experience of War program that incorporates academic study, curation, and focus group discussions, culminating in facilitated discussion forums at the National Veterans Art Museum’s first ever Triennial and Veteran Art Summit in Chicago, Illinois. Through this partnership, MUSE UIC and NVAM will formulate a comprehensive preparatory two-semester course at UIC that will engage and train veteran artists/curators from a multitude of artistic mediums, preparing these facilitators to lead discussion forums focused on wars from WWI to the present, while MUSE course participants receive rich practical experience with cultural programming and curation.

Abstract: With a focus on the visual, literary, performative and creative practices of veterans, the National Veterans Art Museum Triennial explores a century of war and survival while challenging the perception that war is something only those who have served in the military can comprehend. Throughout history, art has provided a frame to create meaning out of the complicated experience of war, seek justice and imagine reconciliation. The National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM) Triennial draws on this history to connect today’s veteran artists with the history of veteran creative practices and their impact on society over the past century. The NVAM Triennial exhibition opening coincides with the inaugural Veteran Art Summit, which features a series of presentations, workshops, panels and discussions, held at the Chicago Cultural Center, DePaul Art Museum and National Veterans Art Museum. This supplementary newspaper includes essays and descriptions of the Triennial exhibitions, the performance program, the literature component, an education guide and an overview of the Veteran Art Summit

Abstract: The Veteran Art Summit, held May 3–5, 2019, brought together over fifty veteran artists from across the United States, with the intention of strengthening the veteran art movement. Abstract: DePaul Art Museum presents a solo exhibition by Eric J. Garcia (b. New Mexico, 1977) as part of the first-ever National Veterans Art Museum Triennial and Veteran Art Summit. Garcia’s interdisciplinary practice utilizes political satire to critique social and political issues, confronting corrupt politicians, gentrification, violence, racism, and other social injustices. Eric J. Garcia: The Bald Eagle’s Toupee features a site-specific mural on the museum's second floor and the 2016 installation War Nest, presented with a new set of projected animations. Other works include a video trailer for a forthcoming video game, produced with the Plug In Studio (Steve Ciampaglia + Kerry Richardson), that follows the experience of a veteran returning home and re-acclimating to civilian life. The exhibition is accompanied by an artist-designed brochure featuring a selection of Garcia's political cartoons and drawings. Concurrent exhibitions are on view at the Chicago Cultural Center and National Veterans Art Museum through July 29, 2019. Eric J.
