Urban Studies Program for in-service training of teachers, sponsored by Humanities and Social Sciences at St. Mary's College and Graduate Department of Education of the University of Notre Dame. ABSTRACT: Inter-institutional Urban Studies Program for in-service training of teachers, sponsored by Humanities and Social Sciences of St. Mary's College and the Graduate Department of Education of the University of Notre Dame. Develop understanding of the complex forces which have shaped the urban environment-origins, growth, problems, decay, planning and prospects for the future. Study of the city in American history from colonial times to present, with special emphasis on the method of historical research in local history. Each participant prepares paper on some aspect of history of local area or city. Present urban crisis can only be understood in terms of evolution of the urban environment. Program encourages teachers to deal with local problems, to explore the development of local institutions and better enable them to arrive at solutions for present and future problems. Fund for salaries, tuition, room and board.
