To re-establish the Sourtheastern Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies, part of a cooperative program in the humanities operated by Duke University and the University of North Carolina. The institute was created to bring some of the best known scholars to the Chapel Hill-Durham area; and provide an opportunity for teachers who, for one reason or another, had not had the facilities or opportunity to pursue their own research.
