To teach a course surveying the pervasive and varied use of Aphorisms, maxims, and proverbs in medicine, science, ethics, moral philosophy, & literature, considering the peculiar appeal of these expressions as vehicles of serious thought. It will treat these forms as an expression of secular pietism or statements of belief as well as aesthetic strategies deployed to please while instructing.
