To make a critical study of Virgil's Georgics which will include an assessment of 1) Virgil's originality in terms of structural design and metaphorical patterns; 2) the place of the Georgics in Virgil's total production and in the hitory of Roman ideas; 3) the present importance of the Georgics to those who are concerned with the relationship of man to his environment.
