For the purpose of conducting research toward the preparation of a linguistic handbook of the Middle and South Atlantic States, which will provide information on regional speech patterns and their correlation with settlement history and social structure. The research utlizes field records for the Atlantic Seaboard, records of publications in the field, the linguistic Atlas of U.S. and Canada, and involves intensive reading in the settlement history of the region. This handbook is useful to historians, sociologist and critics of American literature, to students of regional and local speech patterns, and of the social structure of speech differences.
