To study the ways in which fairy tales, myths, and other suprarational elements entered Dickens' writings and shaped his art. The results of this study will be published in a full-length illustrated book to be entitled Dickens and Fairy Tales. The study will also demonstrate the ways in which fairy tales and allied elements controlled many of Dickens' characteristic methods and effects. Finally, the study will help clarify the ways in which fairy tales, myths, and the marvelous contribute to literature in general, and, indeed, to all the arts.
