To study the figure of the strikebreaker in 19th and 20th c. U.S. labor history. To examine such questions as; who broke strikes? Did "scabs’1 differ appreciably from those whose strikes they were undermining? Have blacks, women, and so-called New Immigrants been unfairly stigmatized? Can strikebreaking be viewed as a means of immigrant adjustment? What motivated employers to hire strikebreakers? Despite the frequency with which strikebreaking has occurred in the U.S., this crucial aspect of labor history has never been subjected to systematic investigation.
