To analyze and study The Book of Concord of Henry David Thoreau as a book rather than a journal. Grantee will unfold the story of Thoreau's life long struggle to become a new American writer, free of the conventions which Emerson exemplified. The study will also attempt to show that Thoreau did not lose his creative power after 1855, but that in the late Journal he found an authorial identity in a bargain so private it has never been properly understood.
