To study the textual existence of character and identity through an analysis of such stylistic functions as epithet, apposition, and delegation of narrative "authority" from narrator to character. The works involved are drawn from French literature of the 17th and 18th centuries, a period when such a sense of person emerges as a legitimate and primary aspect of a literary text.
