Antonio Enriquez Gomes: The Prose of Exile

FAIN: FA-12128-78

Glen F. Dille
Bradley University (Peoria, IL 61625-0001)

This project is the third phase of a general study of Enriquez that has been undertaken for the past two years. The first phase involved collecting all available critical material on this author and the procurement of as many copies of his works as possible. The second part of the project is a study of his dramatic works. The third phase is an investigation of his prose. Due to his Jewish heritage, Enriquez was forced to exile to France for about 13 years. About the year 1649 he returned to Spain. He died in the prisons of the Inquisitions in 1663. His importance to the understanding of the Spanish 17th century concerns more than merely his unhappy experience; his is the enduring testimony of a large segment of Spanish society.
