Edition of Greek Documentary Papyri

FAIN: FB-10444-70

John C. Shelton
University of Trier (Trier, Germany)

Fellow to decipher and interpret Greek papyri owned by the University of California at Berkeley. The texts are official documents relating to the land-holding and taxation systems used in the Greco-Egyptian village of Kerkeosiris during one generation of the late 2nd century BC. The majority of the texts are land surveys and tax lists. A selection of these texts was published in 1902; several thousand lines of unpublished texts will greatly supplemetn and often correct the published materials. The completed edition will constitute the only major study of Ptolemaic Egypt based on fresh evidence to appear in the last 50 years.
