Project would begin with the religious revival in Europe and the U.S. in the 19th century, moving on to the secularization of that movement in romantic literature in Germany, Scandinavia, and the U.S. Social aspects will include the concept and role of women in romantic life and literature, the rise of the "common man" in Europe and the U.S. especially as represented by Jeffersonian Democracy and its descendants. The Victorian reaction will be examined together with the resultant reaction in the 1920's, culminating in present-day movements such as Womens' Literature and the Populist revival in American politics.
