A study of the novels of Jane Austen, Mm. de Stael, and George Sand focusing on the concept of womanhood as presented in the novels of these early 19th century women novelists in England and France. The purpose of this study is three-fold: 1) to contribute to the appreciation of the novel as genre; 2) to expand the study of the novel from a concentration on its development in France to an analysis of a comparative nature; 3) to relate literary creativity to the history of ideas.
