To study Greek and Roman erotic elegy. Three basic questions will be emphasized: 1) the multiple range of the Greek elegy as opposed to the primarily erotic Latin elegy; 2) the origins of the Roman subjective erotic elegy; and, 3) the interrelations between the erotic elegy and other genres such as pastoral lyric, and epigram. These problems involve, inter alia, the definition of genres, the Roman theory of imitation, and, ultimately, the relationship between content and form.
