To do an analysis of the evolution of photography within the 20th C. visual arts continuum. In 1900, photography emerged from the visual limbo where it had languished for 60 years, and became an acknowledged, if initially suspect, member of the visual arts community. As the century progressed, so has photography, seemingly with the same inevitability—today it is everywhere. Project will develop a new overview, in which photography is seen clearly as an integral factor in the evolution of 20th century visual arts, and in which it is subject to the same relativistic analyses that have long been applied to other disciplines.
