To study the relationships of both similarity and difference between contemporary comic fictions and earlier comic forms. Each comic work will be examined: as a unique structure; as a structure in the context of like and unlike structures appearing at a particular time; as a structure in the context of a history of comic structures; as a structure in the context of literary, philosophical and psychological theories about the nature of comedy.
