To study survivals of Symbolist themes and imagery in the work of the modernist painters of the twentieth century who continued the Symbolist emphasis on the absolute union of form and content while developing new pictorial vocabularies. PI will work toward a definition of Symbolism itself, toward an understanding of the period usually considered "Post-Impressionist", and will engage in an intensive investigation of the writing, theories and works of all artists involved.
