To study ancient sources and modern literature relating to the beginnings and development of Roman law and to make inquiry into the fate of this legal tradition in western medieval culture. PI will survey the legal relations between persons belonging to different states and the innovations in international legal relations brought about by the entry of Romans into the full stream of world commerce, using both literary and archaeological sources.
