To examine the development of Southern culture from the perspective of the historical confrontation, interpretation, and interdependence of Black and White Southerners. The P.I. hopes in this way to avoid the prevalent practice of treating American history as the study of white European culture with occassional interruptions by minority contributions. The project will focus role of the black woman--her work, treatment and sphere of influence--in the colonial society of Black and White.
