To locate the patterns of ideas and values that shaped Black identity from 1776-1861 and to related the articulation of these themes to the institutional expressions which formed to the social matrix of Black communities. Periodicals, pamphlets, sermons, books and preceedings of Black organization and public meetings of the period will be examined.
