To survey contemporary theories of style and meaning, with special attention to the problems of teaching and interpreting literature. The survey will include computer and statistical methods of analysis, the stylistics of the London School, Transformational stylistics, Generative stylistics, Russian Formalism, Structuralism, the theory of Speech Acts, and theories of the reading process (psycholinguistic, phenomenological, psychoanalytic, and affective).
